Origins

In 1992, Alice decided to try her hand at running her own business, in the family tradition. Her dad was an old-time independent family practitioner (think Marcus Welby, if you go back that far). She grew up witnessing how her dad focused on his patients and their entire environment and not solely on their physical complaints or illnesses. Alice's dad made house calls and got to know his patients' families, homes, and friends as well as their diseases. Seeing how they lived and understanding their ethnic, family, business, financial, linguistic, and educational backgrounds helped him interpret and answer their questions and concerns.

Alice brings to her business her dad's practice of paying attention to the whole person or enterprise, including physical, social, and cultural aspects as well as the stated technological needs.

Your success is our success

When you have succeeded with our help, then we have succeeded. We think that for you to succeed, we must both listen and learn from each other. We are informal, flexible, hard-working, and have a sense of fun.We enjoy the give and take of a good partnership working toward attaining a goal.

Together, we set realistic expectations

For us to succeed, our first job is to know what you really consider success. That is not always easy to define. We will probe and question you so that together we can set realistic expectations. Expectations work both ways. Although we come to our clients with an excellent understanding of technology and background for acquiring new information, we cannot know everything. We will let you know when we don't know a technology and can usually find a way for you to get the information, service, or product you need for your success.

Dealing with frustration

As anyone who has gone to school (including the school of life) knows, there is sometimes an element of pain in growth and learning: "No pain, no gain". We know and expect that our longer-term client projects will produce some frustrations on the way to success.

If technology were easy to work with, our services would be unnecessary. Often the frustration is caused by communication problems. Much of the terminology of technology doesn't mean exactly what a layperson thinks it means. This leads to the typically frustrating talks with tech support people. Often, the same words are used to mean very different things than a layperson might think. Examples are "network" and "client/server". Even professionals can get mixed up. If we step back and consider how mature the currently available Internet is, we can understand why the technology is full of glitches. Browsers, as we know them, are less than 10 years old. Many of us have TV sets that are older than that. I got my first personal computer less than 20 years ago.

Likewise, many of our clients use jargon that is specific to their industry or background. It can get frustrating for a client who has been living with their business for many years to try to explain their technology and jargon and procedures to us when they are surrounded by people who understand.

Are you ready?

We can catalyze growth and transformation only when our clients are ready. We help you find out if you are ready and, if not, we can help you get ready. We don't think readiness can be forced. We are used to clients who may take several months (or even years) to become ready after our initial contact.

Is it ready?

We keep up with technologies in several fields (for example: electronic, management, organization, social) and keep checking to see if the technology is ready for general use. Generally, we recommend a technology when we feel it is "ready for prime time".

Summary

Alice's Enterprises is a sole proprietorship owned by Alice Wertheimer of Marlborough, MA. Alice founded the business in 1992 and though the scope has changed, the focus has remained on individualized attention to the technological needs of individuals and organizations. Currently, we specialize in the technologies surrounding personal computers, the Internet, and web consulting.

The use of "we"

The company "Alice's Enterprises" is made up of Alice Wertheimer and other people (some on the Internet) who make Alice able to help her clients succeed. Sometimes these people are visible to clients; sometimes not. Despite being a sole proprietorship, Alice doesn't think of Alice's Enterprises as being just herself, but as herself and a large support system that she refers to as "we". The "we" includes colleagues and associates, the online community of experts, tech support personnel, and the many authors of technical and business publications.

A short history

Alice's Enterprises was started in 1992 by Alice Wertheimer. The initial services was Alice's PC Jumpstart, a service to help people become familiar with personal computers (including the Macintosh). As access to the Internet for home users grew and web browsers became standardized, clients wanted to build their own websites and Alice's WebStart was created to help them learn how to build a website. As browsers became more powerful, and connections faster allowing use of rich media, website creation also became more complex and time-consuming. Alice's WebWorks was started for clients who preferred to have a website built for them. With the increasingly bewildering choice of web development options available, Alice's WebConsult provides an entry point for all clients who are thinking of building a web or upgrading an existing web. This service focuses on strategy based on what is really appropriate for a specific client using technology that is ready today.

Alice is a member of the Marlborough Regional Chamber of Commerce and is webmaster for the Route 495 Chapter of the Association for Internet Professionals (AIP-495) .
